Investments
Fund Operations → Investments
Use Investments to maintain the fund's external investment records and follow events that change those positions: calls, contributions, distributions, purchases, redemptions and valuations.
Follow an investment event
An investment remains the same position as calls, contributions, distributions and valuations are recorded against it. Each activity preserves a particular event and its date. A capital-call activity records the manager’s request; a contribution records the funding event and can refer back to that call. Cash settlement is established through the contribution’s cash links.
Keeping those records separate explains what is expected, what has been recorded as funded and what bank evidence supports the funding. Two activities with the same amount can therefore be correct without representing two payments.
Start in Data to identify the investment. Activity records what happens to it over time. In the fictional Harbor example, a USD40,000 Capital Call records a request for funding; a later USD40,000 Contribution references that call. Those two events describe one funding sequence. Record Explorer shows the linked payment and any accounting records.
Use Investment to find the position, and Investor or Portfolio when those relationships help narrow the search. Confirm the selected record before following its links.
Understand the records
There are two different lookthrough questions. An Investment Attribution asks what underlying Asset the investment represents. An allocation scheme asks who participates in that investment’s economics. A Portfolio groups investments for management. None of these relationships substitutes for the dated activity or its settlement evidence.
The Investment master identifies the position. An Asset is an underlying holding linked through an Investment Attribution. An Investment Activity is a dated event. Participation schemes in Allocations connect investment economics to owners such as Share Classes. Creating one of these records does not create the others or establish a cash payment.
