Data
Use Fund Operations → Investments → Data to maintain investment masters and, when used by your organization, their underlying Assets, Investment Attributions and Portfolios. This is setup data; calls, contributions, distributions and valuation events belong in Activity.
Read the four sections
Begin with the external position the fund holds. The Investment master gives that position a continuing identity for later activity. An underlying Asset answers what sits beneath the position; an Investment Attribution is needed to connect those two records. A Portfolio is a management grouping attached to investments.
Ownership is another relationship: a Share Class’s participation in the investment follows allocation schemes rather than the investment-to-asset attribution. These distinctions matter when something is absent. A position can have dated activity and owner participation even if no underlying Asset or Portfolio has been configured.
All investors, portfolios and investments selected. The fictional investment #1 is Harbor Example Software. Assets, Investment Attributions and Portfolios are empty in this example; all four tables have finished loading.
Investments identifies each investment: its name, date, status, currency, description and optional Portfolio reference. Harbor Example Software #1 is Active, dated July 15, 2026, with currency USD and legal name Harbor Example Software Ltd. Active is a stored master status, not proof of settlement, current valuation or journal posting.
Assets contains underlying asset masters. Investment Attributions links an Investment to an Asset, with a date, allocation percentage and activity category. These are different records: creating an Asset alone does not link it to an Investment.
Portfolios organizes investments through the investment's Portfolio reference. It is not a Share Class or an investor participation record.
The example has no Asset attribution or Portfolio assignment. Those empty sections do not erase Harbor's two activities or its separate allocation to Class A. Investment Attributions describes investment-to-asset relationships; Fund Operations → Allocations controls the separate allocation of investment economics to owners such as Share Classes.
Find the right scope
Use Investment for a particular master and its related records, or Portfolio for a grouping. Clear filters when looking for an unassigned record.
Investor finds investments connected through the investor's subscriptions, receiving Share Classes and investment allocation relationships. It does not simply match the investment's name or manager. It uses the available current ownership/allocation relationships; it is not a historical ownership or investor-valued exposure report. A missing subscription or allocation relationship can explain an empty result.
Filters apply across the four sections. Scoped Assets appear through Investment Attributions. Investor and Investment filters restrict Portfolios through matching investments; the Portfolio filter selects the Portfolio directly. An unlinked Asset may therefore disappear while a filter is selected. There is no Entity or as-of date selector on this Data tab.
Use each table's Search records, Filter and Sort for its own rows. Under Classification, Category and Industry remain visible; expand the group for Geography and Tags. Scroll horizontally for Description and Portfolio. Collapse the other section cards if you need more room.
Maintain records in the right order
Create the identity before the relationship that refers to it. An Asset row describes a holding, while its attribution states which Investment points to it. The Portfolio reference groups the Investment. When a relationship is missing, repair that relationship rather than creating another position with the same economics.
In an authorized environment, with supporting evidence:
- Find the existing Investment before using Insert; compare its ID, name, legal name and currency to avoid a duplicate.
- If a Portfolio is needed, create or identify it in Portfolios, then set that reference on the Investment.
- If underlying-asset lookthrough is needed, identify or create the Asset, then insert an Investment Attribution referencing the actual Investment and Asset. Check its date, activity category and allocation percentage against the intended relationship.
- Edit supported cells only where permissions and row locks allow. Wait for saving, refresh and verify the same ID and relationships. Refresh filters if a changed relationship removes a row from the current scope.
Do not insert a master merely to repair a missing cash match. Do not change an Investment Attribution to repair a Share Class allocation: those relationships have different purposes.
Continue the investigation
Open Activity for dated investment events. Use Record Explorer to follow a notice or event into cash settlement and accounting. Use FundOps Recon to investigate allocation coverage or notice/activity exceptions.
